Kaiserslautern is an industrial and university town on the northwestern edge of the Palatinate Forest in the south of Rhineland-Palatinate. In 2017, Kaiserslautern counted 100,341 inhabitants, making it the fifth largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate and its smallest city. Kaiserslautern is still a major industrial city with over 11,000 jobs in the industrial sector. The most important employer in the region, however, is the US military community with about 28,000 jobs.
